Tanfield Railway

The Tanfield railway promotes itself as the worlds oldest railway and consists of four stations between which beautifully restored old steam trains run. You dont have to be a steam buff to enjoy a great day out at Tanfield. You start off at Andrews House station where you buy a ticket which you can take as many trips as you want that day. The station also contains a cafe and a small shop which is entiely run by the volunteers who have restored the trains. Timetables vary throughout the season and each train pulling vintage passenger carriages goes to the first station down the line (Sunniside) where the engine is decoupled moved to another line and reconnected to the back of the carriages. The train then returns to Andrews House station and continues on stopping at each of the other stations. The other stations are Causey Arch and East Tanfield. One of the great things about the railway is that you can get on and of the train wherever you want and at Causey Arch there is a picnic site where you can relax and view the famous old arch before catching the train back again on one of its return trips. A full trip up and down the line takes about an hour. We took our grandson to Tanfield and we all really enjoyed our day out. You can also take a walk around the Tanfield engine sheds where there are many old steam locomotives in various states of restoration which is very interesting and makes you realise how much hard work has one into restoring these trains. Charges Adults £8.00 Children £4.00 Seniors £5.00 Family £20.00 (2 Adults + 2 Children) Children under 5 free

My top tips:  Take some sandwiches for a picnic at Causey Arch

We used our discover pass (courtesy of familiesrecommend competition) to visit Tanfield Railway. It's a steam train that travels from Sunniside to East Tanfield. We got on at Andrew's House, not far from Causey Arch, travelled to Sunniside, then back to Andrew's House, onto Causey Arch, East Tanfield and then back to Andrew's House. There's lovely walks and picnic areas at each stop and the kid's just loved being on the steam train too! Under 5's are free, and it only costs £8 per adult......B1G1F with your discover pass!
My top tips:  Get a discover pass only costs £2 and then you get 1 free with each paying adult/child
