I visited Alnwick Gardens in July 2008 with my husband and 1 year old son. We had a brilliant time and thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to the Gardens. I would definitely recommend it to all types of family groups as I would say it is great for people of all ages. We saw a mixture of families with kids of all ages, to couples, to groups of pensioners and all seemed to be having a great time. You can’t take dogs (except guide dogs into the Garden). There are loads to do. The garden is split into areas, the water cascade is enormous and has big displays every half hour, the poison garden, which you need to take a guided tour, the rose garden which smells fantastic, a walled garden, a bamboo garden and of course the tree house and rope bridges. There is also a children’s water feature area, where the kids can play and get wet with different water displays. They also provide pedal diggers at the bottom of the cascade for the kids to ride and collect water in. The highlight for us was that the whole day was good, but the highlight was the children’s water play area – lots of screams of laughter from everyone there. Great fun. It’s £10.00 per adult and 1p for children. The café was about what you’d expect, not cheap but ok, cost us £3.00 for 2 large cups of tea. There were facilities for everyone, including disabled access to most areas and baby changing facilities. The café had high chairs too.
My top tips:
1. If you’ve got kids, take a change of clothes and a towel for them, as it’s likely they’ll want to get into the water at some point. I don’t think we saw a child that wasn’t wet!
2. If you don’t want to pay for food in the Pavilion Café or the Tree House, there are loads of spaces to sit and eat a picnic including the large grassy area in front of the cascade. And there are seats located in all of the areas, if you want to take a break during your tour.
3. The toilets in the gift shop are much nicer than the toilets near the entrance to the garden itself.
