We attended one of the kiddies' events at Chesters Roman Fort, run by English Heritage, over the first May Bank Holiday weekend. They had been advertising for Roman soldiers so we decided to allow our 2 girls to be conscripted into the Roman army for an hour or so. Excellent session - a Roman centurion told us about life as a soldier and showed us their kit etc. He had that knack of entertaining not just the children, but the adults too. The kiddies even got to try the stuff on, including some rather weighty chainmail. The children were then issued with a sword and shield and taken through some drill moves, all in Latin. They charged towards the asembled parents, banging their shields menacingly, and then formed into the famous 'tortoise' (or is it 'turtle'?!) formation. My 8 year old, who professes to 'hate history', didn't stop laughing from start to finish.
My top tips:   Keep an eye out for similar events for children at Chesters Roman Fort and at the other Hadrian Wall sites - if they are as good as this one, you won't be disappointed! Chesters is an excellent example of a typical Roman fort of Hadrian's Wall. Plenty of space for picnics, but there is a cafe there as well.
