I took my 2 year old son to the Blue Reef Aquarium a few weeks ago. Part of the aquarium was closed off because of refurbishment work but we had access to everything else. I got a discount because of this, although I still paid around £5. We moved quickly through the aquarium, with my son particularly liking the otters and the seals. The seals were getting a feed while we were there, and I was extremely interested but my 2yo had other ideas! I agree with the previous review that it is a bit expensive for the size of the place, and we weren't in that long. However, it was interesting and I think as my son gets older he'll probably appreciate all the exhibits more. It's got a small cafe and a gift shop (which you can access without paying to go into the aquarium).
My top tips:
Good for a winter / rainy excursion.

We took our kids to Tynemouth Aquarium last weekend, thought we would kill a few hours before tea time. Entrance was quite expensive £7.95 adults, child £5.95, family ticket £25.80, under 3's free. There were lot's of fish, otters and a few monkeys....but we only managed to kill 45mins and that was walking really slowly with a 3 1/2 yr old and 1 1/2 yr old..certainly didn't managed the 2 hours we had planned! It is pretty small and I felt not good value for money. Had it been half the price we would probably go every few months or so, but costing £20 for 45 mins really didn't seem fair! worth a visit if it's raining and maybe better for older kids as there were things for them to do on the way round and they do also have feeding times etc throughout the day, but as you wouldn't really go for a full day you should maybe ring ahead for these times
My top tips:
Visit http://www.bluereefaquarium.co.uk/tynemouth.htm for more info Phone ahead for fish feeding times etc. Don't go with high expectations!
