It might be a bit strange to recommend a complete town but Corbridge is a great day out for all the family. The tiny town just before Hexham is a wonderful place to visit in the summer. The historic town has some great pubs and little shops but the highlight for me is the river and river bank. I remember going to Corbridge when I was a child. We used to take a picnic and park up next to the river bank and enjoy the chicken sarnies and sausage rolls my Mam had prepared. My Dad used to take my sister and I to the water's edge, under the historic bridge so we could go paddling in the water and try to cross to each arch of the bridge without falling over by the rushing current. The place has not changed much over the years and I have since been back as an adult and done the same things.
My top tips:  A great cheap day out with the family if the weather is great. The local chippie and ice cream shops are always a treat. Kids will no doubt love paddling in the water.
