We visited in the middle of a blizzard in February 09 but still had a great time. Obviously best to visit in good weather when the animals are more amenable to coming out of their cosy dens! We took the safari bus to the top of the hill then worked our way downwards as the whole zoo rests on quite a steep hill. The guide/driver is knowledgable and will stop at times for you to have a look at areas of interest. The new centre for gorillas is great with pleanty of space to walk (or for toddlers run) around and is all indoors for that unpredictable Scottish weather. The main cafe sells reasonable quality food and has a small softplay area to amuse very small children, but there are also a few areas where you can have a picnic. The highlight of one of our other visits here was a close encounters handling session. This was a small group session of around 12 people and entailed getting to know and handle various creatures from cockroaches (yes this is where you try to convince your 3 year old that you really like and respect all wildlife!) to snakes and parrots.
My top tips: Ask at reception about the small group sessions
