Nestled between the towering St. James Park (home of Newcastle United) and the Royal Victoria Infirmary – Leazes Park is a wonderful little oasis right in the centre of Newcastle.
I often come here with my two year old either before or after a little shopping trip. Not only do I get to kill two birds with one stone (ie my love of shopping) but also allowing my son to run around in the fresh air and experiencing nature. I love this park.
I love the fact that its so close to the city centre (5 mins walk) and that although most locals have heard of it, few actually consider it a place to unwind during the working day or at the weekend whilst out shopping. But I also love it for the fact that it offers something for everyone. It reminds me of Central Park in New York (not in size obviously) but in the fact you can take a walk and find lots of new things to see, do or relax. And its right in the city. There's loads to do, including feeding the ducks, swans, geese etc., hire and take a rowing boat out on the lake, picnic, go to the play parks, watch the bowls, play tennis, basketball or just meander through the tree lined paths.
My son and I often spend a good 90 – 120 minutes here, once we’ve fed the ducks, had an ice cream and played in the children’s play area before walking slowly back through the park. I usually go before a bit of shopping as the running around often tires him enough to allow me to do a little shopping in peace!
My top tips:
I definitely recommend checking it out next time you are in Newcastle – it’s a great place for families of all shapes and sizes. A great afternoon out. I’d combine it on a Summer’s day with a spot of shopping or visit to the Newcastle Discovery Museum which is also free.
