Lindisfarne Castle is located on Holy Island just off the Northumberland coast south of Berwick Upon Tweed. The island is reached via a causway which is covered by the sea at high tide. The castle is in a spectacular position on the top of a high hill and is about a mile from the village on the island. The castle was originally an Elizabethan fort protecting Holy Island harbour. After it had stopped being used as a fort in 1893 it was bought by Edward Hudson (founder of Country House magazine) who commissioned his friend Sir Edward Lutyens to convert the property into a holiday home. The castle now is basically the result of the conversion. The castle has about 6 bedrooms as well as kitchen, dining room, and long gallery. It is well worth a visit. On the exterior of the castle there is a walled garden designed by the famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and is well worth a visit as well, it is full of colour in summer (it also has a Kitchen garden). The garden is currently being restored to the original design as it was in 1912. The property is owned by the National Trust and costs £6.30 per adult, £3.10 for children, £15.70 for a family. It is free for National Trust members. There is a bus which runs at 20 minute intervals to the castle and back again. The paths to the castle are very steep so it is not really suitable for wheelchairs. There is plenty of parking just outside of the village which is only a short walk away. There is a parking fee to pay. If you are lucky you may be able to buy home grown fruit and vegetables from the locals who display them outside their homes. Delicious home made Crab sandwiches are for sale as well. Visit Lindisfarne Priory while you are on the Island.
My top tips:
Make sure you check the crossing times to the island before leaving home as they vary greatly throughout the year
