Lindisfarne Priory is located on Holy Island just off the Northumberland coast about 8 miles south of Berwick upon Tweed. The island is reached via a causway which is covered by the sea at high tide (Check out crossing times before going). This is an English Heritage property and was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo Saxon England. Its most famous prior was St Cuthbert (now buried in Durham cathedral). Although the priory is in ruins there are many interesting parts still standing and many grassed places to sit and enjoy a picnic. English Heritage also puts on many events throughout the year. Visit the Castle while you are on the Island. This was redesigned by the famous architect Edwin Lutyens and the walled garden was designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
My top tips: Make sure you check the crossing times to the island before leaving home as they vary greatly throughout the year .
