Northumberland Driving Route no website no map If you fancy a pleasant drive taking in the stunning scenery of Northumberland try following the brown Northumberland Coastal Route signs up the coast. The route takes in some really nice places and many of them off the beaten track. If you start at the southern end of the route it takes in Newbiggin by the Sea, Amble, then the beautiful village of Warkworth. Points of interest are the “Couple” work of art in Newbiggin and in Warkworth are the castle and the riverside which is good for a picnic or a walk. Next point of interest up the coast is Alnmouth which is a pleasant little village where you can get food in the local pubs or spend some time on the sand dunes next to the golf course. If you continue up the coast via some nice country roads you pass through Boulmer (also the RAF base) and up to Craster. Craster is a little fishing village famous for its kippers. You can buy the locally smoked kippers in the village. Dunstanburgh Castle is close to Craster and can only be reached by foot across some fields (it is about a mile and a half). The castle itself is a ruin but the walk along the cliff top is very pleasant. The route continues up the coast to Seahouses which is a great place to get fish and chips. Just north of Seahouses is Bamburgh, which is a pleasant little village dominated by the impressive Bamburgh Castle on the headland. There are further places to stop further North (such as Holy Island) as well as places on the way which I have not mentioned. This means that you can take the route several times stopping at different places each time.
