Saltwell Park was voted Best Park in Britain a few years ago and it really is. There is a pond with swan peddle boats, ducks to feed, a petting area, aviary, the towers cafe, bowling area and 2 separate children's play areas - age specific. Loads of open grass areas to have a picnic in too!
My top tips: Take bread for the ducks

Saltwell Park is a very large Victorian park in the centre of Gateshead (it is about 50 acres), situated approximately 2 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne over the famous Tyne Bridge. The park has huge grassed areas where you can enjoy picnics and play with the children or just simply relax. The park has many other attractions, such as a lake (where you can hire a rowing boat), there is a "pets corner" with cages containing rabbits, guinea pigs, tropical birds, there are landscaped, woodland and ornamental gardens as well as public sports facilities, a refreshment house, bowling greens etc. There is an old Victorian house, Saltwell Towers, (which has now been restored) and is the parks visitors centre. The big attraction of the park is that it is free!
My top tips: Free parking has to be found on the outskirts of the park
