Staithes is a quaint little fishing village in North Yorkshire, north of Whitby. It is set at the bottom of a steep cliff on either side of a small river. The village is like a place lost in time with quaint little shops and steep cobbled streets leading to a small harbour where fishing is still carried out by brightly painted cobles. The fisherman catch cod, lobsters and crabs and you can buy delicious crab sandwiches and other fishy delights at various shops in the village. There is a small sandy beach with rock pools that the kids will enjoy exploring. Remember to take your camera as there are many great photo opportunities, from the little fishing cottages with lobster pots outside, to scenic views of the village and sea front. There is a bridge that crosses the small river (more like a stream) so you can spend time on both sides. The river marks the boundary between North Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland. Captain James Cook (the guy who discovered Australia) worked in the village as a young boy and it is claimed that this is where he got his love of the sea.
My top tips:  Park your car in the car park on the clifftop and walk down into the village as the streets are so narrow and there are very few parking spots.
